Police in Uganda launched an investigation on Monday in the killing of Robert Kabera, a former Rwanda Defence Forces soldier and outspoken critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, whose body was discovered in Mpigi District near Kampala, Uganda.
Police told The Associated Press (AP) that he had been beheaded and that his head had not yet been recovered. Authorities say investigations are ongoing and no motive has been established.
In 2020, Kabera escaped Rwanda and became a vocal critic of its government through his social media channels.
Before his departure, he was part of the military and gained recognition as a member of the Army Jazz Band, as highlighted in a 2008 New Times newspaper profile referenced by AP.
His death is expected to bring renewed scrutiny to the ongoing accusations from critics and human rights organizations about the treatment of government opponents in Rwanda.
Despite these allegations, Rwandan officials have consistently denied targeting political adversaries, and President Kagame insists that his administration adheres to the rule of law.
